Fighting against US legal rights for terrorists from Senator David Vitter
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010This week I introduced a Senate resolution condemning the actions of Attorney General Eric Holder for granting the Christmas Day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab legal rights that we share as U.S. citizens. I was joined by six other senators in stating that America’s terrorist enemies should not be afforded the same Constitutional rights as American citizens.
My resolution states that Abdulmutallab should not be granted a civilian trial nor the right to remain silent. We lost valuable intelligence when agents were told to read Abdulmutallab his “Miranda” rights under the direction of Attorney General Holder.
The Attorney General’s decision to stop Abdulmutallab’s interrogation after a mere 50 minutes cost us untold intelligence information and made America less safe. At a minimum, the Attorney General should consult the FBI Director, the Director of National Intelligence, and others before unilaterally deciding to terminate the interrogation of a key intelligence source and to give a terrorist enemy the rights of an American citizen.
Rest assured I will keep fighting efforts to grant terrorists the same Constitutional rights we as American citizens were afforded by our Founding Fathers.
