For the first time since 1891, a Republican will represent the 2nd Congressional District in Louisiana. For the first time in the history of this nation, a Vietnamese American will serve in the United States Congress. For the first time in many years, Louisiana is making national news for the right reasons.

Voters in northwest Louisiana chose today to send Republican John Fleming to Washington as 4th District congressman, ending a storm-lengthened 2008 election cycle charged by presidential politics.
With all 640 precincts reporting, Fleming squeaked ahead of Carmouche after a night of nail-biting jousting between the two as results trickled in from 13 parishes. (more…)

Indicted Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) has lost his New Orleans-based Congressional seat to a little-known Republican attorney, Anh “Joseph” Cao.
With all precincts reporting, Cao has defeated Jefferson 50 to 47 percent. The AP has called the race for Cao. (more…)

The most important election of our lifetimes is now just two weeks away. As the race continues to tighten across the country the Republican Party and Republican activists across Louisiana are rallying behind John McCain and Sarah Palin. Congressman Don Cazayoux’s most recent ad is a typical example of partisan pessimism for political gain. The entire ad is focused on begging for liberal handouts and ignores the drastically improved performance of the state and federal response to Hurricane Gustav. There will always be room for improvement to disaster response, but during political season it is not surprising that a typical politician ignored the successful leadership of Governor Bobby Jindal in a partisan attempt at political one-upmanship.
