Below is a letter from Link Savoie. He is the Republican candidate for the District 24 Senate Seat. Voting is this Saturday.
Hi Ruth,
I am Link Savoie, a conservative pro-lifer from St. Landry Parish. After serving 22 years in the U.S. Army I retired as an officer and Special Agent (C.I.D) with the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command, Washington, D.C. I am very proud to say that I survived the Korean and Vietnam wars and presently a full time veterans advocate for our guys and gals in St. Landry Parish and any other part of the state if my services are needed. I am also very proud to have been elected by our Louisiana veterans as the Department Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for Louisiana for the term of 2003-04.
I am a candidate for the District 24 Senate seat and if elected I would be a strong advocate to help aid in the reforms that Louisiana needs. As evidenced in our bloated budget, which has us facing a deficit, spending has increased to levels that our state’s revenues cannot sustain. I would vigorously search for ways to reduce government, or else eventually, the good tax breaks that have recently been passed will have to be repealed. The residents of the 24th District don’t need to have any more of their income taken by the federal or state government.
Of the many concerns we have in Louisiana I have elected to highlight a few. The care and needs of the ELDERLY. They should never have to choose between paying for food or paying for medication. EDUCATION–unlocks every avenue for one willing to succeed and contribute in furthering the success of Louisiana. AGRICULTURE–having been raised on a farm I fully realized that the family income depended on “tilling” the sol for cotton, corn and potatoes were a MUST for my parents to feed a family of 10. Therefore, ANYONE, who totally depends on the GROUND for a living and totally depends on a POND for a living and totally depends on cattle and horses for a living–BELIEVE ME–will have a friend in Baton Rouge as their State Senator. VETERANS–as a military retired person–this is near and dear to my heart–veterans should never be homeless, should never be jobless, should never be denied medical benefits. I fully intend to continue shining that bright light on the veterans needs. JUVENILE SITUATIONS–I am amazed that this problem exists in this state. Taking into consideration that for years solutions have surfaced in Baton Rouge–but, too many solutions CLOGGED THE POLITICAL SYSTEM AND THE SOLUTIONS FADED–thus a failed JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. Instead of changing the system when we change administration–I suggest we get serious and build from the past and MOVE FORWARD on juvenile situations. INTER-STRUCTOR–Parish Councils and Police Juries should not count too heavily on the “proposed” stimulus package. They should be working on their own parish stimulus package developed by their own council . At present these parishes are WAITING on the government for help.
Ruth, these are just a few of the concerns I have for this state. I did not want to bore you with my concerns, but they are all of our concerns if we want this state to move forward–belts must be tightened and each person must do their part. Is this doable? Absolutely!! That is the great muscle Americans are made of during this economic hardships.
Thanks for your time and allowing me to say “hello.”
